CAMPAIGN! MAKE AN IMPACT CELEBRATION EVENT

On the 13 May 2010 at the Quay Arts Centre year 7 students from Lake Middle School showcased campaign films created as part of the Campaign! Make an Impact project. Students created campaigns on subjects they felt extremely passionate about. These included animal welfare and saving endangered species, anti-smoking, child labour, knife crime, homeless people and drink driving.

The students and their teacher Debbie Phillips did a fantastic job introducing their own films and not only impressed their families but also inspired invited middle school teachers to run the project back in their own schools.

Students from Lake Middle School have learnt how people campaigned to rid Victorian Newport of cholera, have looked at original documents such as burial records at the Records Office and visited historical sites before learning about modern campaigning skills. Students became filmmakers for the day, with the help of local film maker John Cattle and animator Joanne Hummel-Newell. These films short campaign films are the culmination of all the hard work that the students have put into the project.

Campaign! Make an Impact is an innovative initiative led by British Library that uses history to inspire young people into active citizenship. Young people explore historical campaigns, learn campaign communication skills, and run their own campaigns about issues that affect them today. It is being rolled-out as a national programme by the British Library and MLA Council working partnership over 2009-2011 and is funded through the DCMS/DCSF Strategic Commissioning Programme.
